"Using DCA prior to surgery"

Hi, I've put a post in the general discussion, however, my question related to surgery hasn't been answered so I thought I'd try another topic.

My mum is scheduled for rectal tumour surgery on 11th Nov....I've ordered DCA and it will arrive this week. My question is:

Would it be helpful to take DCA prior to the surgery for a week or so?

Is anyone aware of any serious contra-indications to using DCA prior to surgery? (i.e. does it cause blood thinning etc?).

Because of its 24 hour half life, when would Mum need to stop it prior to the surgery to have it out of her system properly?

On another note...I read some interesting info on Tagamet (cimetidine)used prior to colon or rectal surgery for a week leading up to surgery and then taken for a year post surgery with outstanding results....ironically, the study was done in Sydney, Australia at a hospital I worked at 100 years ago! I'll assume nothing further has developed in the study of this area because cimetidine came off patent....Has anyone had any experience using this drug?

All information gratefully received....Thanks.

Kylie

My sister has done two operations so far and in both of them she'd stopped taking DCA at the day she entered the Hospital. As far as I know, there is no problem taking DCA before surgery.

Thanks for that. I'm concerned because Mum is 73 but in otherwise good health. Obviously the older a person is they don't process things as quickly...I'll be interested to hear of any further experiences.

Best wishes
Kylie
