"Glioblastoma"

Hello. My father was recently diagnosed with glioblastoma. He just celebrated his 76th birthday and was in excellent health before his diagnosis. He had surgery resulting in approx. 80% of the tumor being removed. However, the tumor is very aggressive and he appears to be deteriorating rapidly. Because his incision wasn't healing properly, the doctors postponed his chemo and radiation therapy for almost 6 weeks but put they put him on a steroid for the time being. Unfortunately, he seems to have a reaction to the steroid; his entire body swelled including his face and he is having problems walking and breathing. I heard about DCA and I am intersted in trying to get my father on it. Is there anyone on this forum diagnosed with GBM and who also took DCA that I can chat with? I desperately want to hear about what worked for you and what you may recommend. I am so fearful that the swelling and weak leg muscles are a result of the tumor growing rapidly and not the result of the steroid. Thus, I would like to get him on DCA ASAP but I need to know if there would be any drug reactions with the steroid and what side effects were experienced.

I would appreciate any guidance that one could give me on this matter.

Mellie,

Sorry to hear of your father's cancer. The symptoms you describe sound much like side effects of dexamethasone - is this the steroid he is taking?

There are fantastic success stories of DCA against brain cancer here:

This one describes some of the struggles from using Decadron (dexamethasone):

I would caution using radiation and DCA for your father, at his age. The two together may be too much in his now weakened condition. A couple years ago, I wrote to 'areyesgo' in Spain whose 80 year old father had glioblastoma and was treated with radiation and DCA. Sadly, he passed away - there was a lot of swelling in his brain from the treatment...

Take care,
Sandra

   Sandra,

Thank you for your response. Yes, my father is on Deacadron. We want to take him off of it but the doctors are telling us that he will likely have a seizure if we do. However, in the 6 weeks since he has been diagnosed with GBM, he already lost his ability to walk or stand. He has also ballooned to almost double his size! We just don't know what to do. Do you have any suggestions?

With regard to the DCA and radiation. He is just beginning his first round of radiation on Monday, which will be given 5 days a week for three weeks. Is it better to start him on the DCA after the three weeks of radiation?

Thank you for the links. Those were really helpful.

I'm not a doctor, I can't advise you on how to get him off decadron. I do know that radiation effects last for several weeks after treatment though. You'd have to be very cautious if you want to start DCA.
