   RE not finding a scale
Any ceramic supply house could sell you a scale that should measure at least down to a gram.(and possibly less-it's been awhile) They use it for making up glaze recipe test batches. Laguna Clay (in Florida I think) is just one I can think of.
Calgary has one called Ceramics Canada in the south end of town - or at least there was one when I was there. Check it out on the internet or if you have an Art college within calling range check with their ceramics department. Someone there will be able to tell you where the local supply is.
